The times they are a-changin’ – Genoa in Football Manager 2013

1924 Genoa

I hope the Bob Dylan fans out there enjoyed the title to this post and it’s appropriate because I’m now at the end of the 2024/25 season, still with Genoa and things have moved on considerably in the two seasons since I last wrote about this save.

Proudly, my team won the Italian Cup in 2024, last season, I believe it was a sign of our steady improvement since I took over five years ago.

That’s the only cup we’ve won; we seem to always come up against Juventus whenever we’re close to achieving something special and they’re such a strong team on FM13 they usually eliminate us.

Juventus have in fact won Serie A for the past five seasons in a row and 12 out of a possible 13 and are set to win it again as they’re first in the league, three points ahead of Parma, with one game to go.

Serie A

Never have I had such an urge to destroy a club with a data editor… It’s just not right.

However, Eden Hazard will have to retire soon so that’ll weaken them.

Moreover, it annoys me that Juve’s brilliant striker, Trentini, is a player I signed for Parma only for him to be sold after I’d been sacked.

I knew how good he could be and there’s no way I would’ve let him go to dirty Conte’s club if I had continued as manager and who knows if they would’ve been nearly as successful without him banging in the goals.

The thing about Juventus is they always find brilliant young players who never seem to flop and this just consolidates their unbeatable aura.

The Old Lady have just won the Euro Cup after beating us along the way, I was so annoyed when they dropped out of the European Cup, I just knew I’d have to play them.

Anyway, in terms of Genoa, we’re perenial contenders in the European Cup/ Champions League and tend to get to the first knockout round.

We even won a group including Man Utd in 2022/23 beating them at Old Trafford which gave me hope we were becoming a very good team.

A lot of players have come in and out and our formation has changed several times from a 4-4-1-1 to a 4-2-3-1 with wingers and now we use a 4-2-3-1 with three AMs.

Genoa tactics

Our star striker, Jan ter Borgh, who we signed from the wonderkid factory Ajax, for £20m, has very impressive stats for a 23-year-old, however his goalscoring form has blown hot and cold all season – one of the most frustrating aspects of FM.

ter Borgh

Having said that he has scored 18 goals in 33 games but he could easily have 30 if it wasn’t for the barren spells of five games at a time he suffers.

I miss the FM12 days where your striker would score 50+ goals per season :(.

I’ve been tempted on several occasions to quit Genoa but I’m in too deep now and have to stay until I knock Juventus off their f##king perch which at this rate could take me until FM14!

The 2024/25 season is nearly over and our form’s dipped recently allowing Pescara to overtake us in to third so we will finish fourth which is a satisfactory but also painfully average conclusion to the season for us.

Pescara came from nowhere winning 10/12 games while our league form was mildly affected by our participation in the Euro Cup.

In comparison, we’ve lost five of our last 12 games in Serie A.

Nevermind though as I really believe we’ll have a chance in 2025/26 to actually win Serie A or the first time since 1924 as long as I don’t make too many signings or completely revamp our tactics once again.
